If you work on the computer in an office or at home, you know how tiring it can be. While the impact is not the same as a job that is physically demanding, a computer job can be difficult in other ways. The good news is that by following some simple steps, you can help make your office job a little easier and less strenuous on the body and mind.
Move! Our bodies were made to move, not sit all day. Without movement, the organs in our bodies slow down and get sluggish. Muscles become lethargic and your overall metabolism slows down. This in turn affects the functions of the body such as the heart, glands, liver, kidneys and blood flow. The answer to this dilemma is to move about more during the day. At any opportunity, stand, walk around a bit, or anything else you can do to get some movement in your body.
Eat right! Along with sitting all day comes the tendency to gain weight. Calories are not burned and you are sedentary. People who work in offices tend to eat from vending machines, which contain snacks and drinks that are high in sugar and fat. Co-workers bring donuts to the job and it's almost impossible to resist them. Start your day with a good breakfast that is high in protein. While you may not be able to resist one donut, at least you won't eat two or three. Eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can throughout the day. Lunch can be a nice salad with veggies and dressing. Eating right takes a plan, but with some extra thought, you can do this!
Drink water! Sometimes we underestimate the affect that beverages have upon our health, emotions and energy. Of course, the typical office beverage is coffee, which is usually enjoyed by many people all day long. Coffee, soda, and other caffeinated beverages are okay in moderation. However, most people drink these in excess and their mental and physical well-being then suffers. Instead of these, drink water. Find a type of water you like - bottled, water cooler, lemon flavored, etc. - and drink it. You will be amazed at how much better you will feel!
Exercise! No, don't worry about hitting the gym every night. However, do strive to do some walking or aerobics 3-4 times a week, even if it's only for 15-20 minutes. Again, you will sleep better and have more energy.
Use proper support! When working at your desk, be sure and use furniture and products that will give your body the support it needs. Your chair and desk need to be comfortable and ergonomic. Your feet should touch the floor and your back should be supported at all times. Otherwise, you will be sore from sitting all day and ignoring the muscles that you need.
It's quite simple to take better care of yourself at your desk job. Many people don't use their common sense and they are sick physically, emotionally and mentally from bad habits. Take care of your body and your body will take care of you!
